Contacts and new scarves
May. 1st, 2007 08:57 pmGot my eye exam Sunday and the results came out pretty much as I expected: my vision is still pretty much the same after 3 years (one eye is actually even a little bit better) and I can keep my current glasses and contacts. ^_^
Since I won’t have to spend money on new glasses or regular contacts, I’ll try to get color contacts for Count D’s mismatched eyes. That is, assuming I can get the right colors in my prescription. I need toric lenses for astigmatism and colors tend to be much more limited in those. -_- The boxed Freshlook contacts the optometrist was thinking of prescribing only come in 4 colors and they don’t have a purple; he’s ordering a sample of the honey shade because I want to see if it’ll work okay for D’s gold eye. And he said he’d check whether vial contacts came in purple. Will have to wait until we go back to pick up my father’s new glasses to see what he has to tell me.
Hmm… Do any of you use color contacts and need them in toric? What lenses do you have if you do?
Need to get back to work on Terra soon. I’ve been lazy since getting back from Anime Boston and haven’t really gotten any costume stuff done. I think I need to rip out at least one of the sequined flowers I did on the back panels of the dress because I ended up with two right next to each other when the zipper is closed and it just looks dumb. But I finally took a picture of my new pink scarf with the others.

Masquerade info has been posted on the Anime North site now and it looks like I’ll be wearing Terra most of Saturday if I want to compete with it. Seems the masquerade is scheduled for a 5PM start this year with check-in for participants at 2:30. (Earliest I've ever seen at a con. o_o) Considering I’d have to start changing into Terra around 1 at the latest, I don’t know if it would be worth it to wear something else for a couple of hours in the morning.

Date: 2007-05-02 11:53 pm (UTC)Definitely won't be worth wearing more than one costume on sat then. I'm seriously thinking about ditching the masq again this year. I've never been in it before and their weird times are the reason. It's such a long wait!!
I think they're making everyone who wants to sign up for the masq attend a safety/conduct/rules panel on the fri which will cause problems for people who only attend on the sat but that actual masq sign up is sat morning in what will be a hideously long line. I've also heard this year they're capping the masq number at 80 entries which to me is still insanely high. ><
But then, since nothing gets posted till the last minute it's so hard to tell with AN. They've always been bad at updating their website and letting us know whats going on. (why I just cosplay and rarely attend panels/events there)It's a con of random fun so just expect to do a lot of wandering around. ^^;

Date: 2007-05-03 08:51 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's a long wait but I think that's true to some extent for masquerades at any con. Many American ones have some form of preregistration and will have craftsmanship judging done ahead of time so you don't have to wait as long when lining up for the show itself. But some will also have you attend a rehearsal which can take a while if they're running late due to tech problems. And the last masquerade I was in started nearly 2 hours late because of tech problems. x_x;
Yeah, 80 entries is pretty high, more than I've seen at any masquerade before. Hmm... I wonder if there are lots of solo entries and small groups then. The last couple of years we've only gotten thirty something entries at AnimeNext. There seemed to be more the first couple of years I went so I wonder if it's because people are getting together in bigger groups for skits. Last year's Best in Show was an Utena group with like 10 or 12 people. And Anime Boston, which is only a bit smaller than Anime North, had a cap of 40 skits and 20 walk-ons.

Date: 2007-05-03 11:11 pm (UTC)I talked to my optometrist and he said toric lenses won't make that much difference unless they're for daily wear. You can still see just fine with regular ones. My perscription is strong like a -4.50 and a -4.75 with a stigmatism in the left. I've never had to bother getting toric lenses, the regular ones work just fine for me. I only wear them on special occasions or at cons.

I got the clearly colours violet venom ones from clearlycontacts.com. They're really nice on dark eyes. I didn't order mine in perscription but I could have. They take 3 days to fedex them to you.
The reason I did'nt get them in RX powers was because I didn't think the amber from that brand was gold enough to work for D and ayame, I was doing both at the same con last year. I got a pair of sunburst lenses from the hallween section on that site instead. It's very very bright and I luv it, but it didn't come in RX only plain. I can't wear one contact with perscription and one without so I had to get both the violet and gold pairs without.
If you want to try another type instead of the freaky yellow ones I went for, acuvue 2 colours opaques has a warm honey that might be ok and they come in RX. there's also Illusions in soft amber. I think these lenses look the best for a natural light golden look. They're just beautifully blended.
did that help at all?

Date: 2007-05-04 01:30 pm (UTC)Before he looked up what colors the Freshlook torics came in, I tried on the “hazel” shade in Freshlook’s regular colors and “pure hazel” in their colorblends. Neither was that yellow although the pure hazel did look kind of cool since it made my normally nearly black eye seem much lighter and luminous. And neither shade came in toric.
A lot of this is going to be up to the optometrist though since he’s the one who has to approve the prescription before I can get any contacts. All his color samples seemed to be Freshlook so I don’t know if he’d prescribe other brands. I’ll probably go for a more natural interpretation of D’s eyes, too, since my optometrist strikes me as being on the conservative side and I don’t know if he’d approve theatrical lenses. (Well, and I don’t like any of the yellow theatrical lenses that I’ve seen that much either. ^_^;)
I don’t know if I would order contacts online though since his shop had a notice posted that if you wanted only a prescription without buying contacts there, you’d still have to pay $75 or more as a fitting fee. Going out to pick up my father’s glasses today so I guess I’ll see what the optometrist has to say then.

Date: 2007-05-05 03:15 am (UTC)You're right, if you haven't ever worn contacts before you shouldn't order them off line. But as long as you already have a perscription for them and have worn them in the past it is perfectly safe. You do not have to pay a new fitting fee if you already wear contacts, unless you were still a teenager and your eyes have grown since you were last fitted. The base curve is what they measure when they fit your lenses, it's the shape/curve of your eyeball, and it shouldn't change over time.
contacts can be really tricky. I hope you have some luck finding wha you need! ^^
