That 11 random facts meme...

Not much of interest for me to post about right now so I thought I’d fill out that 11 random things about me meme that has been going around. I don't think I've ever told most of my friends list this stuff before so maybe it'll be more interesting than my crochet ramblings lately.
1)Cross stitch used to be my major hobby before cosplay. I actually even went to a couple of needlework conventions back then, long before my first anime con!
2)“Lady of the Thread” comes from the name of a cross stitch piece I did many years ago and won one of my first needlework awards for.
3)During junior high, I took guitar and piano lessons but was terrible at both and gave up after a couple of years. XD;
4)I’ve been on the stage at both Avery Fisher Hall (at Lincoln Center) and Radio City Music Hall. (for high school and college graduations; I already said I have no musical talent! :-P)
5)I’ve also been on the trading floor of the NY Stock Exchange. Ironically, this was before I ever started business school. My high school economics teacher had a chance to take a few students to the stock exchange and I was one of the ones picked.
6)I originally got accepted to NYU as an accounting major but ended up double majoring in marketing and finance. Still hated it even though I graduated with honors. >_>
7)I studied part time at Parsons and got a fashion design certificate there.
8)Out of all fandoms, my largest collection is my Nancy Drew stuff. I have over 100 of the books, including a few vintage volumes, reprints of the 1930s editions, and some of the graphic novels. I have nearly all of the computer games, too.
9)Many years ago, I had the weird idea to crochet a pair of angel wings. If I recall correctly, they had little pearls worked into them, too. This was before I got into cosplay. XD;
10)Also before I got into cosplay, I liked sewing costumey things and made 3 random cloaks. I haven’t made a single cape/cloak since I started cosplaying though!
11)All of my costumes have been made on relatively simple Kenmore sewing machines and I’ve never had a serger. Until early last year, I used my mother’s old machine which was the cheapest and most basic Kenmore model. I have a somewhat fancier one now.

Date: 2008-10-20 09:12 am (UTC)And that's awesome that you have such a huge Nancy Drew collection! X3 I think I remember you posted a pic of some of the books once. I hope that they'll re-release more of the paperbacks soon; I was thrilled when they put out the first seven in hardback, from #57 to #64! I'm still working on getting all of those. (Except #63; I already have it in paperback. Though the hardback is admittedly tempting, especially with the artwork....)

Date: 2008-10-22 03:37 am (UTC)Ooh, I didn't even realize a few of the paperbacks got reprinted in hardcover. It's been a long time since I really bought any of the books although I still enjoy rereading one once in a while and playing the computer games. ^_^; Might have to look into those volumes sometime. I think I've heard most of the paperbacks are out of print now and there are a few of the early ones which I don't think I ever read.

Date: 2008-10-22 03:50 am (UTC)How was the needlework con? In the states, we used to have Spirit of Cross Stitch and later Creative Arts and Textiles Show. They used to do 5 or 6 festivals a year, each in a different region, but I think the big shows like that have mostly died off now.

Date: 2008-10-22 04:23 pm (UTC)My mom weaves and spins and knits. We both do basket weaving and chair caning too. You name it, from candle and soap making to some of the weird things like dying wool with koolaid in the microwave out in the garage, we've done it. ><;
And don't even get me started on the stamping and card making and scrapbooking stuff she's gotten into. Between that and tupperware theres always a fedex box on our front step.

Date: 2008-10-23 03:12 am (UTC)Do you have pictures of any of your quilted stuff? It sounds interesting. :-) Hmm... If you aunt teaches miniature quilting and your family does all this crafts stuff, have you ever considered trying to get into teaching crafts yourself as a side thing? Or is there just not enough interest in your area?
I’ve heard of stumpwork but haven’t tried it myself. I have done a little silk ribbon stuff but my preference was always for counted techniques like cross stitch. I have a half-finished quilt top lying around though and mean to try it again one of these days. I know Mark Lipinski who edits Quilter’s Home magazine and I have a couple of patterns from the magazines I’d like to try out. I keep getting into costume projects though so I don’t know when I’ll actually get around to it. >_>;
