Ugh, it’s looking like I need to redo nearly all of the black robe for D’s vampire costume because I was dumb and forgot to take into account how wide my shoulders are. x_x I’ve started from the same pattern and size for most of my D outfits without a problem but it’s a struggle to get this one on and off because there isn’t really any room for me to bend my elbows. I was making it so it was slit up the sides to several inches above the waist and with a slit in the front down to bust level; the sides would be joined with the straps I posted last time and I’d have frog buttons for the front slit.
Unfortunately, due to the order I had to sew things, I couldn’t check the fit until it was nearly done. The only things left to do were a mandarin collar, adding the closures and straps, and joining the lining to the outer layer. So, it was a really bad time to find it was too small in the shoulders and bust. I raised the side slits a couple of inches, dropped the front slit an inch, and tore out part of the darts in the back to see if that would help but it wasn’t enough. Because of how I trimmed or clipped some of my seams while I was sewing, it’s not really possible to let it out otherwise so it looks like I’d be better off starting over. -_-;
And although I have over a yard of my velvet left, it isn’t long enough to cut out the main robe pieces again. The store where I bought it isn’t open Sundays and I can’t just get a different velvet somewhere else since all the straps are made with the fabric I already have. So, at most, I’ll only be able to remake the sleeves tomorrow. Not good when the Japan Society cosplay party is next Saturday and I have plans with a friend for a photo shoot of that costume earlier in the day. I think I can still make it if I get the fabric Monday but it’s going to be close.
Bah, this costume is turning out much more annoying and expensive than I thought it would be. I already ended up buying more brocade to make a full underdress since I realized it would probably be easier than trying to make panels to fill in the sides. And the small pair of vampire fangs I ordered turned out to be a bit too small for one of my teeth; the real tooth would show at either the side or the top. (That was a waste of $20. -_-) So, I got a pair of the regular size and can get them to fit but they feel uncomfortably large for my mouth. And I’ll probably end up getting lipstick on them and looking even more ridiculous. :-P
