ladyofthethread: (D)
[personal profile] ladyofthethread
A few months back, I asked if anyone were interested in doing a Petshop of Horrors group sometime but there weren’t any definite plans made. But [profile] novaraven (who has also cosplayed D plus his father and grandfather) is now working on plans to come down from Canada for Anime Boston so I thought it might be a good time to try for a group. She’s also making the 19th Century D outfit so we’re going to be confusing and wear our versions together as D and his grandpa. :-D Plus, she should have a Leon with her and possibly a Pon-Chan.

Currently, there are no plans to do a skit or the hall contest together but we were talking about applying for cosplay chess and I’m sure we’ll do pictures at some point. ^_^ If you’d like to join us, let me know. See the links for reference pics or if you want to look at the whole album: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v342/LadyoftheThread/psoh%20reference/. We can also try to have a smaller group for AnimeNext if people are interested since I know at least one person isn’t able to make AB.

Count D – myself (although I can also wear his sister’s dress for a while if someone else would like a turn playing D)
D’s grandfather –[profile] novaraven
D’s father –
D’s sister
Leon –[profile] novaraven’s friend
T-Chan (totetsu)[profile] kiwi_lady is going to do T-Chan for AnimeNext but probably won't be able to make AB ;_;
Pon-Chan (racoon) – [profile] novaraven's friend if she comes
Honlon (3-headed dragon) – a couple of people are interested in this although I don't have a definite yet
Ten-Chan (9-tailed fox) – [profile] bloodied_tears
Medusa (basilisk) – [profile] heartxofxlilith
P-Chan (bird of pardise) – Lilly from cosplay.com
Alice (rabbit)
Keirin (kirin)
Eva (mermaid) (obviously this one needs some modifications so you don’t get kicked out of the con if anyone wants to do it ^_^;;;) –
Suioh (phoenix)
Alex (vampire)
Norma (vampire)
Dreizehn (doberman)
Toki birds[profile] jezeroth is tentatively doing the male ibis; the female bird has not been claimed
Mellow (digital fish)
Pandora (Maine coon cat)
Tina (jaguar)
Butterfly –
Sohki (kirin) (Sohki is actually from Genju no Seiza, another of Matsuri Akino's manga, but he goes to visit D in a bonus story in one of the Genju no Seiza volumes)–

If anyone wants to do something I didn’t list, let me know and I’ll add it in. I omitted a bunch of the little kid characters with less interesting designs, pets we never saw human versions of, and stuff from the sequel since I didn’t think anyone would be likely to want to do those. Also, there are a lot of pets that only appear as background characters (you can see a few in the pic with Norma) and a few that are only in artbook pictures or extra illustrations. (I think the lolita catgirls are cute but D needs nicer clothes in that picture. Ripped cobweb patterned stuff and a bondage collar is so out of character. O_o;;)

And, jumping to a somewhat related topic, I got the collar for the new costume finished. I ended up appliquéing the trim along the edges and I think it came out pretty well. ^_^ Need to work on the main robe next.

Wow, your dress is looking LOVELY so far!
(As always)

I just posted in my journal about upcoming cosplay plans and Medusa is pretty much 99.9999 percent definite.

I know Alyssa was interested in doing HonLon, i will ask her about it.

Im really excited and I think having a huge group would be AMAZING.

Thank you. :-)

Ooh, having you as Medusa for a group would be great! ^_^ And yes, it would be exciting if we could pull together a large group.

Let me know about Honlon after you have time to ask. It would be fun to have her for a group, too! And probably a dumb question but is Alyssa the one who was with you and kiwi lady at AB this year? I’m terribly forgetful about proper introductions at cons so a lot of times I know people only by screennames. ._.;;

As you know I am considering Anime Boston. Of the 3 Petshop costumes making, you already have 2 (Medusa & D). If I can come, I will focus on the 3rd - Honlon. I will have to see if can find any colored pictures, since all my references are black & white.

From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Ah, I didn’t know you were also working on Medusa and Honlon costumes. The person doing Medusa commented above that a friend of hers might be interested in Honlon but she had to check. ^_^; I’m not sure what others think but personally, I don’t mind duplicates. I think multiple D’s would be kind of funny since they’re sort of like clones and I have his sister’s dress which I could wear for a while.

Hmm… As far as I know, there’s no color reference of Honlon since she’s not in any of the artbook pics/cover illustrations. I think there’s only what’s in the manga.

Oh, and if you can make it, there might be a Twelve Kingdoms group, too. :-) Novaraven was planning to make Youko and Keiki costumes for herself and her boyfriend. If she gets them finished by AB, I’m going to try to bring my nyosen uniform.

I wish I could attend that con, otherwise I'd gladly make something for your group^^

Wonderful work on the shoulders so far, I'm impressed!

Thanks. ^_^

Yeah, it's too bad you're far away. It seems like a lot of the PSOH fans I've talked to online are scattered and I haven't come across many cosplayers for it in the northeast.

Your trim on the shoulder pieces looks really sharp. Nice work!

And OMG I'd love to do a group with that single art shot sometime. Talk about decadently creepy.

Thanks. ^_^

Well, if you’re going to be back on the east coast sometime and want to cosplay from PSOH, let me know. It would probably be difficult to get a complete group for that artbook picture but even one of the pets on its own would be impressive since they’re all pretty challenging designs.

The collar looks amazing! Is it for the D from the pheonix story?

And I can do Ten-chan, if you like. ^^ A petshop group in Chess sounds like awesomesauce.

Thanks. :-) Yes, the collar is for the D from the phoenix chapter. It should be done by December.

If you want to do Ten-chan, that would be great. ^_^ I'll put you down for him.

OMG, the costume looks AMAZING! O.O
And you've got the pearls!! *claps the hands, jumping*
*___________* It's becoming soooo amazing!

Naaah, I wish I didn't live sooooooooo far T_T Here, it would be even more difficult to gather people to make a PSoH cosplay group. The only cosplayer I ever saw trying PSoH was Simone Setti, the one who tried the Kirin [and made it so perfectly that I amost died when watching the video]. If I were there I'd totally try Norma.

[[I know this is useless, but I got a bit confused when I saw something written in Portuguese in one of the mangas xD You have a picture of it. Right below the 'Diamonde' in the Toki birds' image, there's 'Lágrima de Diamante' written. I looked at that like 'O.O why the f***??' xD
Though I so wanted to try to cosplay one of them o.o So beautiful!]]

Ok, ok, enough useless comments. Just one more thing: loved the drabbles on your last post ^^

Thanks. ^_^

Yes, a lot of the Petshop fans I’ve talked to online seem scattered and there don’t seem to be many cosplayers for it in the northeast US.

Oh, it’s Portuguese? The birds in that story were also known by the name diamond’s tear. Hmm… But now that you mention it, it seems kind of random to have that since they were supposed to be Japanese birds. O_o

There's no need for thanks when we're just commenting a fact. It *is* amazing.

That's the whole problem, HAHAHA xD There are not enough PSoH fans anywhere we look! It is such a wonderful manga, why doesn't it have more fans? Are the good manga's fans all into that Naruto bullshit? u.u Seriously, I can't understand what do people see in that Naruto. or even in Vash Stampede. Anyway... I need to go to the US and help you to gather PSoH fans for a group cosplay. hohohohoho

And yeah, it is portuguese ^^ Lágrimas de Diamante = Diamond's tear, though you already know it. And that's the very reason why I got so confused, why is the name in Portuguese?? Only Akino knows for sure o.o

Hmm… Don’t know. I’ve never seen/read a lot of the really popular series because a lot of them seem to fall into the action category and I’m not really into that type of thing. I find I tend to like series with ongoing plots that are like puzzles which you gradually work out. Must be from liking to read mystery novels. ^_^;

Not sure about that either. Maybe, Lagrimas de Diamante was a nickname for the birds that originated in Portuguese? Can’t think of another good reason for it being written like that.

I'm hating college RIGGGGHT about now DD :!!
I'm still SUPER interested in doing T chan of course +_+;;;
AN would probably work out better for me though... (since AB falls at the last week of my spring break.. I COULD try, but I'm probably not going to be able to come D :.)
But yes!! AN! DEFINITELY count me in!
(btw, your new D = FANTASTIC (or shuld I say D's ancestor XD;) )

Date: 2007-10-22 12:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Thank you. ^_^ Yeah, it's supposed to be his ancestor but they all look like clones anyway. LOL

It's too bad you probably can't come to AB ;_; but I understand. It's not going to be that practical to take a trip all the way from your school to Boston just for a con. I'm sure we could pull together a small group for AN though! (although I might have to wear a different robe since it'll be June and the one I'm making now has so many layers. ^_^;;)

Can we add Lord Sohki to the possible cosplay list? I know he's technically from Genju no Seiza but he knows D and he's been to the shop at least once. He's also my fav kirin ever. ^^

It's the same style of robe as Honlan and the girl Kirin from PSOH, the colours are blue and silver, and his hair is blue. (if it's the same colour as his mane from the cover shot he was on) I think he'd be a very pretty cosplay.

Date: 2007-10-23 04:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Okay, added Sohki to the list although my camera batteries died and I don't have a reference pic to post at the moment. ^_^;

Looks like if things work out, there should be around 6 or 7 of us. ^_^ Hmm... Maybe, if no one claims P-Chan, I could go to cosplay.com and try PMing the P-Chan I took pictures with this year to see if she's planning to bring the costume again. Her costume was gorgeous but I don't know her other than having met at the con and have no idea if she's on LJ. ^_^;;

That's a very good sized group. i hope everything works out alright! PSOH deserves all the love it can get. It's odd how little it's cosplayed even tho everyone seems to know it. My sisters school friend from Japan was over tonight and coincidentally it was the only manga on my shelf she'd read before. I thought my others were much more well known, like even fruits basket should be more popular?

Messaging P-chan player on cosplay.com is a good idea. If she already has the costume made then it might be easier to convince her. ^^

Date: 2007-10-26 04:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Yeah, I’d think Fruits Basket would be more well known, too. o_o Hmm… Maybe, it’s not cosplayed as much since it’s older and only had an OVA and not a real anime series? A lot of the popular series seem to have both an anime and manga and I can’t think of many that were popular as manga only. And maybe, people don’t want to do minor characters? Although a lot of the pets have pretty designs, many of them only appear for one chapter and the only main characters are really D and Leon. It seems like I’ve been finding more Petshop cosplay online this past year or so though. Like I’ve seen 4 cosplays based on the peacock dress since I’ve made mine o_o even though all the earlier ones I’d seen were from some years ago. Maybe, it’s due to the artbook coming out?

Date: 2007-10-26 08:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] novaraven.livejournal.com
I don't think the art book is well known at all. It's hard to find and only in japanese. I think people are cosplaying the peacock dress because they've seen how well yours turned out. ^^ Actually most of them don't know about the art book and choose the colours randomly. It's a very plain outfit unless you change it anyways.

More popular series have far more cosplayers. Maybe we can get things to go the other way. By cosplaying a series will get it more attention? Maybe if we cosplay enough we'll get PSOH a real anime series someday! ^^;

From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Hmm... I don't know. My peacock dress has gotten a couple of photoshoots and has been to more conventions but it's not as if I'm particularly known. ^_^;; I think at least one of them did see the artbook though since they had the accurate colors.

Oh, and I PMed the P-Chan cosplayer a few days ago. Might take a while to hear back though since it looks like she hasn't been to cosplay.com for a few weeks.

WOW. I'm adoring your collar right now, and can only hope that I may do something even half as nice some day.

I'm so sad that I live so far away - I've been wanting to wear Bird again but have either been ill or the con was not dressy enough each time I've taken him out! ::cry::

May I ask what you used to give the shoulders their shape and stiffness? My guess is hat-weight interfacing, plastic canvas, or foam.

Date: 2007-10-23 04:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Thank you. :-) I did a collar that was somewhat similar in shape on an earlier costume so figuring out the pattern for this one was a bit easier after that experience. And you’re somewhat close with your guess of plastic canvas. I actually used needlepoint canvas to interface the collar. I bought regular heavy interfacing but then decided it was too floppy. I had a couple of yards of needlepoint canvas that I hadn’t used in years stashed in my closet so I decided to pull that out and try that instead. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. ^_^

Aww, it’s a shame you haven’t had a chance to wear your Bird of Paradise again. :-( It’s a beautiful costume and I would have loved to have you for the group if you weren’t so far away. I wish PSOH cosplayers weren’t so few and scattered. It would be cool to meet some from other parts of the country but it’s not that practical to travel really long distances just for a con.

It just so happens the avatar that was with your message seems to depict the shoulders you are speaking of. ^.^ It is very much a shame we live so far apart - I could learn a lot from you! I've already learned some things from you, and we haven't even met yet! :)

Date: 2007-10-26 04:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
*laugh* Yes, that's the collar. I did it a couple of years ago and I could only drape my pattern over my shoulders and try to guess if it would work since I didn't get my dressform until a few months ago. ^_^; The dressform definitely made working out the pattern for the current collar easier.

I'm tentatively going to put myself down for the male Ibis/Toki bird. I'm going to jazz the design up a little, but I think it's a beautiful design. :)

From: [identity profile] ladyofthethread.livejournal.com
Sure, it would be cool to have you in the group. ^_^ The male ibis seems to wear a few outfits which differ from each other a bit so there shouldn't be any problem with you adding some touches of your own. And the color scheme is already up to you since there are only black and white references. If you need larger versions of the references or anything like that, let me know.

Ooh, I'd honestly love any (reasonable) amount of references/details you could give me of his various designs. (This is the third Mandarin-ish design I'm doing in a four months period... Kinda getting the hang of making some fancy frog clasps.)

No problem. He only appears in one chapter so it's not that many pictures. I'll try to get them posted this weekend and will let you know when they're up. ^_^

*laugh* Nice to know I'm not the only one crazy enough to make my own frogs! I made my own for a couple of PSOH costumes but they were just simple designs.
