I suggest for shojo reading Genjuu no Seiza is by Akino Matsuri and is set in the same universe as Pet shops of horror. The main character Fuuto even visits Count D and so funny they interacted with each other. Like Pet shops of horror, it has occult themes, animals are better than us humans (so true), humor, and talking animals. For more infor on it see link below. Sorry is not anime, but it is a really good manga
