Well, Albert challenged the Count to a duel and his friend Franz, who had been warning him to be wary of the Count from the beginning, wasn't able to convince him to back out. So, Franz drugged Albert and took his place, unbeknownst to the others since they were fighting in suits of armor. And he died. Poor Franz. ;_;

I have a copy of Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca in my bookcase but got distracted and didn't get too far into it. I've seen a movie adaptation or two of it though.
