Back to cosplay stuff...
Aug. 14th, 2009 06:26 pmTuesday, I went into the city and had lunch with a friend. Hadn’t seen her since around Christmas so it was nice to catch up. ^_^ We tried to go to Alice’s Tea Cup since there was one near her office but there was a wait and she had to go back to work in an hour. So, we ended up at a Belgian bakery/cafe instead. We’re going to try to go to Alice’s again another time when we’re not so rushed.
Afterwards, I wandered around the fashion district and downtown a bit to start looking for fabrics for future cosplays. It helped get me back into a costume making mood although I’m still not that eager to work on Ekaterina during the summer; I’ll need to wear the corset to check fit for the outer garments and there’s only a fan in my sewing room. ^_^; I wonder a bit if I should just wait until fall to work on it and do something else for NYAF but then I probably wouldn’t get a chance to wear it at a con until AB in April. :-/
Anyway, I ended up picking up some brocades. I got white and yellow to use as accents for Kyoya’s purple outfit from the last episode of Ouran plus a pattern to start from. I still want to find a lavender brocade for the vest and a purple velvet for the frock coat and breeches.
The velvet seems like it’s going to be hardest since most purple velvets seem to run very dark or towards blue while what I want is a medium purple that doesn’t lean too much towards either blue or red. I also want something on the stiffer side; I don’t think the softer, more drapey varieties would work as well for the frock coat. Something like the cotton velvet I used for my vampire D would have been nice but the store where I got it only had it in dark purples. The best thing I found was Fidelio velvet at B&J Fabrics. The color was in the range I wanted, it wasn’t overly soft and didn’t look cheap. And it wasn’t cheap. It was over $30 a yard so I’m hoping I can find something less pricey. o_o; Anyone have stores to suggest in the city for velvet? I’ve already checked NY Elegant but haven’t gone by Mood yet.
The pattern I got for Kyoya also includes a tricorne pattern so I’m considering making my own hat for Ekaterina. I already bought one at a costume shop months ago but it seemed a bit small when I tried to wear it over my wig.
I also bought some black Chinese brocade with flowers to use for the sash on the Youko costume I want to make. I’m a bit tempted to get more brocade and do that. The artwork is pretty vague and if I don’t add much embellishment, it would be relatively easy and the clothes could probably be done in a few weeks. I’d like to have the sword though and have little idea how I’d do that part. I figure that I’ll try to find one at a costume shop to modify. But the scabbard is one of the more distinctive things about Youko’s sword so it might be tricky to find one that has the right general shape and a scabbard.
