More Progress
Feb. 14th, 2009 02:16 pmHappy Valentine’s Day!
I’ve been rather bad about commenting and posting here lately. I’ve just felt more like sewing than talking so I’ve been acting like a hermit. ^_^;; Haven’t hung out with anyone for a long time either since I skipped NYCC last weekend and I’m obviously not at Katsucon now (like a good chunk of my friends list seems to be ^_^;).
Anyway, I submitted a proposal to try out my seam finishes panel at Anime Boston. I might submit it for AnimeNext, too, when their panel info goes up. (Anyone know when that usually is? I didn’t pay attention in past years since I never did a panel before. ^_^;)
I finished the sewing on my 18th century corset; it just needs laces and ribbons for the straps now. ^_^ I might have to leave the laces extra long since it’s a weird lacing scheme that has one end of the lace fastened at the top and the other at the bottom instead of the normal tying the ends together. I don’t think I can put it on myself unless I leave a long tail and wrap it around my waist to tie it in the front.
I’ve gotten a pattern for pocket hoops drafted from the sketches and directions on this page and it seems to have worked out. I might have to get new fabric and redo it though. :-/ I was hoping to not have to go buy new fabric for these so as a test I did one in white poplin that I had; while the pattern worked out pretty well, the fabric itself had a bit of stretch so it distorted somewhat when I put the steel hoop boning in.
Then, I found I had just enough white linen leftover from a really old sewing project to make a pair of the hoops (plus linen is a good fabric for the period) so I made them in the linen. I finished the main sewing on both but there are two problems now. I realized I should have bought plastic ends to put over the cut edges of the steel boning so that it doesn’t poke through the fabric. So, I had to place another order at Farthingales and pay another round of shipping. -_-; And with the boning in, the linen version seems much more wobbly than the poplin one so I’m thinking it might be better in a stiffer fabric. (The linen I had was rather soft.) So, I might have to remake them. -_-; Bah.
I’ll try to get new fabric if my family goes shopping on Sunday; I still have a JoAnn’s gift card that I got from a friend for Christmas. But otherwise, I think I’m going to take a break from working on the panniers for the weekend and pattern the cape for Count D’s vampire outfit instead.
