I think people at CC are more inclined to wear costumes in the evenings for the contests. I remember in Baltimore on Friday, I didn't really see many people dressed up until afternoon when a big group went out for a costume tea party. And there were some workshops for things that could get messy like dyeing so I imagine some people didn't wear their costumes if they were attending those.

Yeah, and it can be hard to find good references for some shows too unless there are lots of photos or they got recorded and released on DVD. I really need to sit down and go through shows I like for ideas and see if anything is doable.
