Nope, the anime never showed the character's corset. Apparently, this is a historical style of lacing. The Simplicity pattern I used instructed to do the eyelets and lacing this way. And I found a historical costuming site which shows the same lacing method for 18th century corsets: http://www.marquise.de/en/1700/howto/frauen/18corset4.shtml
And yeah, it's kind of impractical. Since I won't have someone to help me dress, I'll probably have to leave my laces long enough so that I can wrap the end around my waist and tie it in the front. ^_^;
