I don't know if NYAF is particularly worth traveling for unless you really want to meet some of the guests like Amano. Last year, it was pretty dead on Friday and the main focus was on the dealer's room. :-/ It looks like there's some more stuff going on this year but I don't know how much of an improvement it'll be and you have to buy extra tickets for some events.
Plus, the Javits shut down around 10 so we'd get kicked out right after the evening events ended. And the location isn't that convenient for cosplay either since it's several blocks from the subway and there aren't hotels right in that area. I hauled my larger costumes in and changed in the bathroom since you could check coats and bags for a couple of dollars apiece.
