ladyofthethread: (Ryuuren with cherry blossoms)
I’ve been meaning to post pictures from the Saiunkoku group at AnimeNext for a few weeks but I’ve been lazy and I’m only getting around to it now. ^_^; [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink was Shuurei again and [livejournal.com profile] kitsunesqueak joined us as Eigetsu. [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan was busy in artist’s alley but dressed one of her friends in her Ryuuki costume so we could have the whole group.

Hmm… It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Inspired by the panel on specialty sewing machine feet at Costume Con, I ordered a few and got them last week. I bought a walking foot, a gathering foot, and a ruffler. Haven’t tried out the walking foot yet. The gathering foot is pretty straightforward although it seems to be for lighter gathers and I still have to pull the threads to gather some more myself. (I suppose stitching a second line after the first would give you fuller gathers although I didn’t want to deal with an extra line of stitching to remove later on.) And the ruffler is kind of scary looking and needs better directions. The little paper in the box told you how to put it on the machine and change the settings but said nothing about how to feed fabric through it although it’s pretty complicated and not completely intuitive like a normal sewing machine foot. Haven’t completely figured that one out yet.

I made a necklace for a new costume and I’ve been slowly gathering lots of tulle ruffles. I haven’t mentioned what it is on here yet so I think I’ll take a progress pic after I finish the petticoat and then we can play “guess the costume.” :-D

And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dressdragn, I have a couple of pictures of the new Ryuuren costume to post from the photoshoot with [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan. ^_^

As mentioned last time, I improved on the hair a lot after Anime Boston. I trimmed the fake bangs some more and used hairspray and a blowdryer on them so they would be messier and not so flat. And I got one of those donut-shaped hair forms intended for making buns to help hold up my high ponytail; added a set of the short bangs from Arda Wigs for the shorter pieces at the top of the ponytail and everything is pinned together under the off-white wrap.

Trying to hide my shortness. ^_^;;

Katsucon photos went up at risingsun.net the other day so I guess I’ll make my photo post now since I have most pics other than a few my brother is still working on.

First, Saiunkoku with [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink as Shuurei and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan as Ryuuki.

Yay, I have Ryuuren photos from [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld! We did these back in October when the botanic garden was doing their Halloween event. And this reminds me I still need to remake my headdress and fix this up for the group at Katsucon. ^_^; Yay, I'll have Shuurei, Eigetsu, and Ryuuki to torture with terrible flute music!

Also Saiunkoku related, I got my present from the [livejournal.com profile] saiunkoku_fic exchange. I had trouble thinking of anything canon I especially wanted to see so I requested a Victorian AU. It was a pretty random prompt but I like period settings and had never seen that one done before. ^_^;; The results were wonderful though and I loved it. ^_^ Link if anyone else wants to read:

And yikes, that was quite a blizzard yesterday. o_o; My brother said even a two foot ruler wasn’t enough to measure all that we got! And our street hasn’t been plowed yet. We had to cancel plans to go out to dinner last night for my mother’s birthday. And the store couldn’t open today so my father got a three day weekend.

Not happy about all the snow since it’s going to delay any plans I had for going out. I still need to visit friends with late Christmas gifts. Plus, I want to see “A Little Night Music" before it closes in a couple of weeks; I never did get to it after the failed attempt in June.

Got a preview pic from yesterday’s photoshoot with [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld. :-) This was taken by a series of arches in the rose garden. It’s kind of cool how it came out looking like a leafy tunnel. Didn’t really get to put everything on at once until the shoot yesterday so I’m probably going to go back and fuss with some things later on. Like a thicker red cord would probably show better than what I have at the moment.

It’s been almost a week and my mouth is still a bit sore from getting that wisdom tooth pulled. o_o; Still need to back to the dentist so he can take out the stitch.

My brother is still working on photos and he’s started putting some of the pics up on ACS. Here’s another pic from NYAF since you can actually see what I did with my hair in this one.

Photobucket

Ryuuren is nearing completion. I have the cape done except for the gold trim; I actually need to go buy more since I seem to have underestimated this time and completely ran out. I’m working on the headdress now and have to put together the jewelry.

Trying to finish it up for the weekend since the botanic garden is doing their Halloween event on the 24th. Hoping to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld and do a photoshoot since I’m not likely to have a chance to get pics at the garden again anytime soon. It’s just too crazy of a costume to try to shoot in public on a normal day and I’ll most likely be missing Sakura Matsuri next year since Anime Boston and Costume Con are back to back weekends in late April/early May.

I’m not planning to go to MangaNext since it’s out of the way and too small to be worth getting a room for. So, I have no idea what, if anything, I’m doing on Halloween itself. The last few years I’ve used it as a chance for costume photos in the city but my brother is somewhat busy with schoolwork these next few weeks and I can’t think of any costume/location combination I especially want. There are things I’d like to get more photos of, like my final episode Kyoya, but they’d be more suitable for indoor locations.

Ouch

It’s turning out to be a rough week here. First, my father twisted his arm at work on Tuesday. Yesterday, I went to the dentist to get a cavity filled and ended up getting my last wisdom tooth extracted, too. The dentist didn’t think it would be so hard to get out but it was stubborn and took over an hour with sawing and taking it out in pieces. X_X Then, after we got home, my mother fell in the back yard while getting the laundry and is now hobbling around with a cane and a swollen knee.

My brother posted a few more NYCC/NYAF preview shots, including [livejournal.com profile] neo2469, [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink, [livejournal.com profile] sakuralenayuy, and [livejournal.com profile] usa_ko: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotofong/

Here’s one from the Monkey Island photoshoot with neoangelwink as Guybrush and myself as Elaine.

Did I really agree to marry this idiot?

Photobucket

And a Saiunkoku pic. My hair is a complete mess since the wind blew my fake bangs all over and I had to bobby pin them off to the side to keep them out of my face. ^_^;; (Plus, they weren’t that great in the first place since I made them the night before. >_>) I did have some of my hair tied up in a loop but since it was towards the back of my head, it started drooping after a while and doesn’t show in the pic. But it does show most of the detail on the brocade shirt; that was the most complicated piece to make because of all the trim. I thought a dragon brocade would be fitting since Ryuuren is from the Ran clan and their crest includes a pair of dragons. And you can see the flute. It was a bamboo one that I painted with nail polish to give it a glossy look. It was never mentioned in the anime but I found out it was supposed to be metal in the novels; I guess that explains why he was able to knock people out with it!

So, far it’s [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink, [livejournal.com profile] sakuralenayuy, [livejournal.com profile] stillvisions and myself. If anyone else wants to come, please let me know in the next couple of days. I’d like to call Saturday to make the reservation.

Since things have been crazy here, my brother is still working on AnimeNext photos but he posted some last night, including [livejournal.com profile] animeangel and [livejournal.com profile] mostflogged’s photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotofong

So, AnimeNext is over. Saw friends, got photos, and it was a nice break from real life. (Things have been a bit depressing at home but that could take up a whole other post. ;_;) My brother posted a few preview pics, including [livejournal.com profile] animeangel, [livejournal.com profile] mostflogged and [livejournal.com profile] sakuralenayuy:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotofong/sets/72157624212665151/

First costume on Friday was Youka from the Twelve Kingdoms with a new sash (although it looked the same as the old one since I bought identical fabric to remake it) and new flowers for my hair. I’ve wanted to rewear this for a while since it only made it to a couple of cons when I made it in 2006. Emi on ACP had sent me a PM a couple of months ago asking about location ideas for Twelve Kingdoms photos so we started talking and decided to get pics together during the con. ^_^ My brother picked the silly photo for the preview!

Changed into Count D’s artbook kimono late in the afternoon and went to get judged for the hall contest. Wandered a bit afterwards and went to the poofy dress panel. Got invited to go out for a group dinner by [livejournal.com profile] blackmarth but unfortunately couldn’t go since I was still in that huge kimono.

Saturday morning was time for the surprise costume, which was Sarah’s cowgirl costume from Kaleido Star. I hadn’t told anyone I was making this and it was kind of funny how some of my friends didn’t recognize me for a second since I wasn’t buried under yards of fabric. :-P I thought it would be fun to do a cowgirl costume sometime since I actually listened to a lot of country music back in the 90’s. (And I’ve been listening to 80’s and 90’s country lately while working on costumes since I found a channel for it on Fios. Yeah, I’m weird considering the other thing I like is musical theatre! XD;) I think this is the tiniest costume I’ve ever made. o_o; Although I made it less tiny than it was actually supposed to be since I used a black tank top instead of a bikini top because I didn’t want my stomach showing. This can mostly be blamed on the fact I found boots that I could paint white for $10; probably wouldn’t have bothered to do this if I needed to spend a lot on shoes for such a simple costume. This preview pic from my brother is the only one I have so far although I did also get a quick shoot with [livejournal.com profile] stillvisions and [livejournal.com profile] tyrus took a few photos, too.

After lunch, I changed into my half-finished Kyoya costume. Quite a contrast to the cowgirl costume. XD; More photos with stillvisions and then [livejournal.com profile] dressdragn. Wandered a bit and ran into and got groped by >_>; [livejournal.com profile] yeu who was also cosplaying Kyoya but in the school uniform.

Here’s a pic that dressdragn took.

I had a few moments of panic later when I lost my camera. One of the artists out in the hallway had noticed what I was cosplaying and showed me cards she had with a chibi drawing of Kyoya in that costume. We chatted a minute and I put my camera down to get money for one of the cards. Didn’t realize until after I went back up to my hotel room that I’d forgotten to pick it back up and rushed back downstairs. Luckily, she had seen my camera and put it aside for me. I have such a lousy memory at times. ._.;

Went to the masquerade but ended up in the overflow room since I got in line late. Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink, [livejournal.com profile] roserevolution, [livejournal.com profile] lady_ava, and [livejournal.com profile] starlighthoney on their awards. ^_^ I got the Best of Friday Craftsman award from the hall contest for my D kimono. But I think the most fun was everyone goofing off after the masquerade and the huge random group picture. Although I was kind of like “Huh? You guys want me in the picture, too?” when [livejournal.com profile] ryoko was calling me over. ^_^;

Finished packing up Sunday morning and put on my Count D kimono again since stillvisions requested it for photos. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my nails anymore since I cut them and took off the polish after Friday night because I wasn’t expecting to cosplay D again until at least Otakon. ^_^; (Plus, Kyoya would have looked silly with long, pink nails. :-P) After photos, I wandered around a bit and finally made it over to video programming to say hi to [livejournal.com profile] ifuritaoni. We ended up walking back to the hotel and chatting for a while in the lobby. We looked over my Petshop of Horrors artbook and he tried to convince me I should get a harem like Count D so it was a silly ending to the con. XD; (Anyone want to cosplay some of the pets? >_>; I haven’t had a group for this series for two years.)

Wow!

Yesterday turned out to be pretty awesome. *_*

I went fabric shopping and picked up 11 yards of silk shantung to make Lia’s Russian portrait dress from Le Chevalier for AnimeNext. (It’s a somewhat long story why my costume choice suddenly changed from Valentine but I’ll get into that next time. ^_^;;)

Then, I went to visit with [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan for a couple of hours before going home. We chatted while they worked on hats and it was nice to get a chance to hang out outside of an event since we haven’t done that for a while. ^_^ I also brought along supplies and showed them how to make sakura flowers like the ones I did as hairpins for my Sakura Matsuri outfit.

[livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld finished editing the photos from the Count D kimono shoot we did at the botanic garden a few weeks ago so I have more pretty costume pictures. ^_^

Plus, I looked at the front page of cosplay.com last night and saw that my comments tab was highlighted. Then, I looked a little further down and realized the preview shot from [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld that I’d posted a few weeks back had been added as a showcase photo! O_O

I tend to drag my feet about updating my cosplay.com gallery since I’m lazy about typing up descriptions and there doesn’t seem to be much interest there nowadays in my obscure cosplays. (Several of the other photos I’ve uploaded there within the past few weeks have gotten less than 50 views and no comments.) That particular photo with the cherry blossoms was the most popular out of what I’ve put up in the last month but this was still completely out of the blue. I don't post much on there anymore and the last time I had something showcased on the site was my 19th Century Count D, over 2 years ago!

It’s kind of nuts how popular the cherry blossom photo has suddenly become with the showcase. o_o;;; As of now, it’s up to over 1,100 views (it was under 200 before yesterday), putting it into my top 4 most viewed photos of all time on cosplay.com (and I made my account there in 2003!). Plus, it has become my second most commented photo on there ever. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if it hit number 1 for both.

And apparently, my brother’s little Sakura Matsuri gallery was also yesterday's link of the day on the ACP facebook, so I was kind of featured there, too! o_o

Anyway, here are a few pics from the D kimono photoshoot. The full set is on [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld’s Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/judithstephens/sets/72157623787349417/

These were a couple of my favorites from the Count D kimono photoshoot. ^_^

The other day, TheBigTog sent me Ekaterina pics from the photoshoot that he did for me at Castle Point Anime Con. These were taken around the campus at the Stevens Institute and this one was my favorite from the set. ^_^ I like the effect of the veil blowing in the wind; it got windy around the middle of the shoot and I was actually holding onto the veil to keep it from blowing around too wildly. I also like the lighting and how my face shows through the chiffon. (He actually had a light stand although we were shooting outdoors.) Happy to finally have some photos of this that aren’t in a con center since it’s from a historical series. ^_^

Luckily, the weather was decent today and we made it to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Met [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld there and she and my brother took lots of photos of my Count D artbook kimono. ^_^

The cherry trees are all in full bloom now so if anyone local wants to see them, you should go this week. Unfortunately, I think they’ll all be gone by the time Sakura Matsuri actually happens in a couple of weeks. ;_; Don’t know if I’ll cosplay for the festival now since the flowers will be gone and most of my costumes are too cumbersome to take the subway in. If I can find a Japanese print fabric I like, I might just make a cute dress to wear instead.

And my brother finished his Anime Boston pics the other night.

Plus, I have stuff to post now! :-D

Here’s my Youko costume from The Twelve Kingdoms. The construction is much like the nyosen uniform I did a few years ago. Two kimono style tops, two skirts, a sash that closes with snaps in the back, and a panel that hangs from a belt hidden under the sash. They’re hard to see in these pics but I got green contacts for this. Still want to add something to that front panel but haven’t decided what.

And my other new costume for the con was Count D’s artbook kimono. I ended up with 96 appliqués on the finished costume and used up about 6 whole spools of the gold metallic thread (around 1,300 yards) stitching them down! The designs on the appliques are handpainted and all the embellishment probably took 45-50 hours between painting, cutting, and sewing.

I went much more in a fantasy direction so the construction is not like a real kimono. I made the tops and skirts separate so that it’s easier for me to get dressed since I have no experience with wearing real kimono. The skirts are based on a half circle skirt and the black one is basically a wrap skirt that buttons together with a bit of overlap. I kind of wish I’d allowed for more overlap since it falls farther apart when I wear it than it did on my dress form. I added an extra flap to the black skirt to fake the waist fold and the obi hides the waistband.

NYAF pics

Oct. 3rd, 2009 12:32 am
ladyofthethread: (D with bird)
Yay, I have pics to post! Ekaterina first since it was my new costume for NYAF. While it looks pretty plain, it was started in January (was originally meant for the historical masquerade at Costume Con) and is actually one of my most time consuming costumes ever. I would say it took 120-140 hours, including the mockups and remakes. The only costume that I’ve ever spent more time on was my formal Terra which had like 200 hours of beading. o_O;

I made almost everything from scratch, including the chemise, corset, and panniers worn underneath plus my hat. The only things not made from scratch were the mask, wig, and boots. It was definitely a learning experience since I’d never built a corset, hoops, or hat before. I researched clothes of the period a bit and tried to incorporate the research where I could while still retaining the anime design, which isn’t that historically accurate. Some pieces, like the jacket and corset got mockups and others like the panniers and black petticoat were remade because I wasn’t satisfied with the originals. And I did stuff like handstitching all the eyelets in my corset since I found in my research that metal grommets weren’t used yet in the 1700s. And I handstitched the buttonholes in my coat for a more historical look instead of just using the automatic buttonhole foot on my machine.

Although it’s pretty plain, I really wanted to make this since I loved Ekaterina’s role in the Le Chevalier D’eon anime. I dislike wimpy female characters so I really like that she went to warn the French knights about the assassination plot against the Russian empress that her husband was involved in despite the jerk slapping her around. (That was what was referenced in my walk-on intro. This outfit was her disguise for that scene.) Plus, she got her revenge on him in the end. >_>;

more Ekaterina photos )

And now for something less ominous, here’s a guy in a poofy pink and red ballgown. :-P

It’s kind of funny that I made a tulle petticoat to keep the hoops from showing but you can see them here anyway because the light was so bright. >_>;

[livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink, your Mikuru photos are up too:

Those coming for dim sum, I’ll see you tomorrow! Bring an umbrella since it looks like the weather’s going to be bad. o_o;
ladyofthethread: (Ayame cosplay)
Already put these up on ACP but didn’t get around to resizing them to post here until today. This batch has my older Ayame costume from the chapter where they visited a lake for Golden Week and Count D’s vacation outfit.

Okay, so it doesn’t look that much like Ayame from this pic (probably should have run my straightening iron through the wig again before the trip) but you can see the lake! ^_^; The people in the boat probably thought we were weird.

more Ayame photos )

Not quite a tropical island… ^_^; Unfortunately, we never got to do beach pictures with this one like I wanted. This outfit was from the chapter where D went on vacation with the Orcots and got amnesia after falling off a boat.

more D photos )

And that’s it for cosplay vacation photos!

Got back to work on my Ekaterina petticoat and I think it should be okay after a few more tweaks. I still don’t get how the waistline came out about 10” larger than what the book said it should be when I first tried it before Costume Con. o_O

NYAF is only 5 weeks away but with the hot weather, I haven’t been very eager to work on the jacket since it would require the undergarments for fitting.

Maybe, I could work on the hat first? Hopefully, I’ll be able to find someplace to get buckram in the city since I’d rather not have to order it online and wait. I wonder if I could substitute needlepoint canvas if I can’t find it since I still have some of that.

I suppose if I run into any more big problems with this, I’ll shelve it again until winter and make Youko for NYAF instead.
ladyofthethread: (D with bird)
Here’s the Gankutsuou photoshoot that my brother and I did while we were on vacation. ^_^ So glad it occurred to me to pack my Eugenie costume since this place was right next to where we were staying. Not as huge as the mansions you see in the series but it was still pretty cool for photos.

I think the higher resolution versions are much nicer though. I’m still working on getting them uploaded to my ACP page at the moment so check in a bit if you’d like to see them: http://www.acparadise.com/acp/display.php?c=22784

I like the reflections in this. This part is actually a modern addition from when the castle was renovated into an inn. The inside is a ballroom for weddings and such.

ladyofthethread: (Eugenie)
My brother finished the cosplay photos we took on vacation. I’ve been especially looking forward to the Gankutsuou pics since we shot those outside a late 1800s mansion. ^_^ This one by the front door was one of my favorites. More to come after I get them resized and uploaded.

ladyofthethread: (D)

Or should I call it “LakeCon” since I even cosplayed while on vacation? XD;

Instead of being at Otakon this year, I was at home packing for a family vacation. We drove upstate to Lake George in the Adirondacks on the 19th and spent a week at a townhouse on the lake. We used to vacation up there a lot when I was younger but the last time we were there was 2002 and we’d only gone on one family vacation since then. Between the cosplay and the fireworks, I think this was possibly our most memorable trip up there so far!

Highlights:
-Doing a Gankutsuou photoshoot outside the castle *_*
-Going around the USA and the world… in mini golf form! ^_^
-Hearing a BOOM on the last night and walking out on the terrace to find there was a fireworks display right outside our house! We assumed some rich guy arranged it for the fancy party being held at the castle. Our vacation literally ended with a bang! :-D

Vacation photos and report: lake views, mountain scenery, steamboats, a castle, ridiculous hats, a giant lobster, birds, horses, fancy cakes, tacky souvenirs, and more! VERY image heavy! )

And here's the last part of the fireworks display for those of you who like explosions. :-P

I wasn’t really interested in getting a YouTube account but I couldn’t get the embedding code for Photobucket to work even though the video uploaded fine there. >_>
