Katsucon photos went up at risingsun.net the other day so I guess I’ll make my photo post now since I have most pics other than a few my brother is still working on.

First, Saiunkoku with [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink as Shuurei and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan as Ryuuki.

I wrote a 100 word PSOH drabble this afternoon, based on the idea that the second day of the Chinese New Year (today) is the birthday of all dogs. Humorous and G-rated:
http://community.livejournal.com/psohdrabble/434839.html

I’m pleasantly surprised it’s up to 7 comments already. ^_^ [livejournal.com profile] psohdrabble had been so dead and there hadn’t been any posts for a couple of months that I wasn’t sure if anyone was still around. It’s a nice change from the lack of response I’ve gotten trying to archive all my old stuff together at ff.net. I’ve only gotten a single review there plus some favorites and alerts despite the PSOH stuff being up to over 2,000 hits combined for all my older pieces. And the Saiunkoku stuff is limping along there with very few hits, a few favorites from one person, and no reviews. Frustrating since it takes more time to write those than the PSOH drabbles.

And I got the latest volume of PSOH: Tokyo in the mail today so I'll have that to read for the weekend.

Update

Hmm… It’s been a while since I’ve posted and a bunch of things have happened since then.

Theatre
I made it to the final Wednesday matinee of “A Little Night Music” back on the 5th. It’s one of my favorite Sondheim scores so I enjoyed having a chance to see it onstage. It’s basically a romantic farce with lots of overlapping love triangles. They definitely played on the comedic material and it was hilarious; it’s kind of easy to forget that there’s also so much humor when just listening to all of the waltz music from the cast recording. The set was relatively simple but I liked how they managed to do so much with it. The walls along the edges of the stage could be lit in various patterns to give the impression of different rooms. Plus, they swiveled to form different arrangements and allow furniture to be brought on and off stage. I particularly liked when the trees were added for act 2. The costumes looked nice although some of the little details weren’t very visible from the audience (I bought a souvenir program afterwards so I was able to see some of the details I missed from the photos in there.) And I was curious how they managed to do some of the costume changes so quickly since they were period costumes. (Would be nice if I could manage to change costumes in a couple of minutes!)

My one complaint would be I couldn’t completely believe Bernadette Peters as the glamorous actress Desiree Armfeldt or Elaine Stritch as her former courtesan mother who once had kings among her lovers because of their accents. The show is set in early 20th Century Sweden and they just didn’t sound European at all. I’d never seen either perform live before but I had seen them in Sondheim things that were taped and released on DVD (Bernadette in “Into the Woods” and “Sunday in the Park with George” and Elaine in the Lincoln Center “Follies” concert). They pretty much sounded as they did in those performances and I felt their own personalities came through so I saw them as Bernadette Peters playing Desiree Armfeldt and Elaine Stritch playing Madame Armfeldt, rather than as Desiree Armfeldt and Madame Armfeldt. I enjoyed the show and they were hilarious, especially Bernadette during the “You Must Meet my Wife” scene, but I just couldn’t completely see them as the characters.

Cosplay
Then, my brother and I went to visit [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink and [livejournal.com profile] loudnbothered on the 8th. Finally exchanged holiday presents with neoangelwink; had tea and cake; and talked a bit about plans for Katsucon and later this year.

Kaleido Star group for Costume Con has been cancelled. Neoangelwink and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan hadn’t realized that Costume Con is the same weekend as Sakura Matsuri and they need to be at the festival to sell hats so they won’t be able to do the group with me. Other people who were interested in possibly doing it with me are also dealing with real life issues so this just seems to be bad timing for everyone and I don’t want people to stress out over costumes when they have more important things to worry about. I don’t feel like trying to rush through Layla’s ballgown by late April if I don’t have a group to present it with so the idea is postponed for now. Depending on whether people still want to try to do the group at some point, we could try for an anime con later on although I don’t know what would be good. The only ones I’m likely to be at this year after Costume Con are AnimeNext and NYCC/NYAF. Or maybe, just do a Kaleido Star group for fun and photos that isn’t limited to the Cinderella costumes.

And this leaves me uncertain about costume plans for this year. While I do have a bunch of things I still want to make someday, there’s nothing jumping out at me that I especially want to work on right now. I guess it doesn’t help that I’m still feeling unmotivated due to the cold. Plus, Chinese New Year is in a couple of weeks and that always means a lot of extra work around the house so it might not be the best time to start a new project anyway.

I’m not sure if I want to try to do something else as a solo entry for Costume Con. There aren’t that many things elaborate enough that I’d especially want to present them at Costume Con versus just getting them judged at an anime con. There’s the Future Fashion Folio which I still have to look over in more detail although I don’t know if I’d actually want to do one. It’s basically a collection of other people’s sketches for original designs so after the contest, it doesn’t seem like there would be many good opportunities to rewear it. Or I could try to come up with a Broadway costume to go with the Costume Con theme. I kind of want to since I love musicals but it’s very hard to come up with the combination of a show I love, a design I want to make, and a character that I like and could pull off. Plus, preferably, it wouldn’t be overly costly or time consuming to make since I doubt there would be a good chance to wear it again. :-/ Or just more anime stuff? I don’t know.

Fanfic
After years of not using it, I decided to clean out my ff.net account the other weekend and start over since I’ve been doing fanfic a bit more the past couple of months and my stuff has been scattered across LJ communities rather than collected in any one place. I’ve posted all of my PSOH stuff but some of my Saiunkoku stuff is being revised so it’s not all up yet.

http://www.fanfiction.net/~ladyofthethread

Going through [livejournal.com profile] psohdrabble to collect all the bits I’ve posted there kind of made me want to write drabbles again (too bad that comm seems dead these days). Not all of them were amazing but I think I was pretty good at it. I could hit 100 words exactly most of the time and usually answer the prompts in a unique way, too. Some weeks, I even managed to also theme them to holidays that were happening in real life at the time, like Chinese New Year. (I think I’m overdue for a rereading of the original PSOH series, too; it’s been quite a while since the last time.)

And now that my stuff has been up at ff.net for about 10 days, I’m looking at the stats and wondering if my Saiunkoku stuff is that boring. I’ve put up a couple of long drabbles plus the beginning of the long AU fic I did for the exchange last month. None of them have even hit 20 visitors yet. Meanwhile, for PSOH stuff, I’ve had 101 visitors for a long drabble, 120 visitors (and over 900 hits) for my collection of 15 short drabbles, and 179 visitors for a pair of longer related drabbles. Figures that the one with the most visitors is the one that sounds somewhat naughty from the summary. >_>;;; I know they’re both small fandoms but I didn’t think it should be that much of a difference considering some of the Saiunkoku LJ communities are actually larger than comparable PSOH ones. Kind of disappointing when the Saiunkoku stuff takes me more time to write since they’ve been longer pieces. :-/

And a slight rant relating to something I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] insaneladybug about a while back... People seem really lazy about reviewing stuff these days because even with all those hits and a few favorites/alerts on all of the PSOH things, I’ve yet to get a single review on anything at all. It wasn’t too uncommon for me to get 4-5 comments (and even more once in a while) on 100 word drabbles when they were originally posted on LJ but there’s been nothing there. I know I’m a much better cosplayer than fanfic writer and wouldn’t expect people to individually review drabbles. But if new people are reading them there and like them, it would be nice if they left one comment. Because while fanfic is fun to play with once in a while as a change from cosplay, I don’t enjoy the writing process as much as sewing and tend to do it in hopes of putting together something that other people will also enjoy or get a laugh out of. I’m not too bothered since I did get nice comments on stuff when it was on LJ but at the same time, it doesn’t help encourage me to get my revisions done so I can finish putting stuff up.
ladyofthethread: (Eugenie)
Went fabric shopping on Monday. Got buttons to finish my Elaine costume and some more stuff for Ryuuren. Also went to visit [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink afterwards to exchange birthday gifts and hang out. She got me a nice tea sampler ^_^ and we watched some anime.

Elaine is now finished and here’s what I have gathered for Ryuuren so far. And I actually still need green fabric. ^_^; Beads, tassels, fringe, feathers… neoangelwink and I were joking that I’m making an Amano costume. This is going to be fun and ridiculous! :-D

Today’s the Mid-Autumn Festival although it seems we won’t get a chance to look at the moon with the thunderstorm going on outside. But we still have mooncakes for later. And after not writing anything in forever, I did a PSOH drabble for the occasion. Although it’s kind of depressing rather than festive. ._.;

My birthday is next week although I feel blah about it and am not planning anything. :-/ I figure it’s probably bad timing anyway since next weekend is the last weekend before NYCC/NYAF and I suspect people will be busy sewing. Then, the weekend after is the con itself and I have a wedding reception to go to on Sunday night after the con.

Wow!

Yesterday turned out to be pretty awesome. *_*

I went fabric shopping and picked up 11 yards of silk shantung to make Lia’s Russian portrait dress from Le Chevalier for AnimeNext. (It’s a somewhat long story why my costume choice suddenly changed from Valentine but I’ll get into that next time. ^_^;;)

Then, I went to visit with [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink and [livejournal.com profile] athena_chan for a couple of hours before going home. We chatted while they worked on hats and it was nice to get a chance to hang out outside of an event since we haven’t done that for a while. ^_^ I also brought along supplies and showed them how to make sakura flowers like the ones I did as hairpins for my Sakura Matsuri outfit.

[livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld finished editing the photos from the Count D kimono shoot we did at the botanic garden a few weeks ago so I have more pretty costume pictures. ^_^

Plus, I looked at the front page of cosplay.com last night and saw that my comments tab was highlighted. Then, I looked a little further down and realized the preview shot from [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld that I’d posted a few weeks back had been added as a showcase photo! O_O

I tend to drag my feet about updating my cosplay.com gallery since I’m lazy about typing up descriptions and there doesn’t seem to be much interest there nowadays in my obscure cosplays. (Several of the other photos I’ve uploaded there within the past few weeks have gotten less than 50 views and no comments.) That particular photo with the cherry blossoms was the most popular out of what I’ve put up in the last month but this was still completely out of the blue. I don't post much on there anymore and the last time I had something showcased on the site was my 19th Century Count D, over 2 years ago!

It’s kind of nuts how popular the cherry blossom photo has suddenly become with the showcase. o_o;;; As of now, it’s up to over 1,100 views (it was under 200 before yesterday), putting it into my top 4 most viewed photos of all time on cosplay.com (and I made my account there in 2003!). Plus, it has become my second most commented photo on there ever. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if it hit number 1 for both.

And apparently, my brother’s little Sakura Matsuri gallery was also yesterday's link of the day on the ACP facebook, so I was kind of featured there, too! o_o

Anyway, here are a few pics from the D kimono photoshoot. The full set is on [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld’s Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/judithstephens/sets/72157623787349417/

And I keep forgetting to mention here, he finally made an ACS account a few weeks ago so he can now be credited from the photographers list on ACP/ACE.

These were a couple of my favorites from the Count D kimono photoshoot. ^_^

Luckily, the weather was decent today and we made it to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Met [livejournal.com profile] thedreamerworld there and she and my brother took lots of photos of my Count D artbook kimono. ^_^

The cherry trees are all in full bloom now so if anyone local wants to see them, you should go this week. Unfortunately, I think they’ll all be gone by the time Sakura Matsuri actually happens in a couple of weeks. ;_; Don’t know if I’ll cosplay for the festival now since the flowers will be gone and most of my costumes are too cumbersome to take the subway in. If I can find a Japanese print fabric I like, I might just make a cute dress to wear instead.

And my brother finished his Anime Boston pics the other night.

A few more pics in the general AB album:

Plus, I have stuff to post now! :-D

Here’s my Youko costume from The Twelve Kingdoms. The construction is much like the nyosen uniform I did a few years ago. Two kimono style tops, two skirts, a sash that closes with snaps in the back, and a panel that hangs from a belt hidden under the sash. They’re hard to see in these pics but I got green contacts for this. Still want to add something to that front panel but haven’t decided what.

And my other new costume for the con was Count D’s artbook kimono. I ended up with 96 appliqués on the finished costume and used up about 6 whole spools of the gold metallic thread (around 1,300 yards) stitching them down! The designs on the appliques are handpainted and all the embellishment probably took 45-50 hours between painting, cutting, and sewing.

I went much more in a fantasy direction so the construction is not like a real kimono. I made the tops and skirts separate so that it’s easier for me to get dressed since I have no experience with wearing real kimono. The skirts are based on a half circle skirt and the black one is basically a wrap skirt that buttons together with a bit of overlap. I kind of wish I’d allowed for more overlap since it falls farther apart when I wear it than it did on my dress form. I added an extra flap to the black skirt to fake the waist fold and the obi hides the waistband.

Already put these up on ACP but didn’t get around to resizing them to post here until today. This batch has my older Ayame costume from the chapter where they visited a lake for Golden Week and Count D’s vacation outfit.

Okay, so it doesn’t look that much like Ayame from this pic (probably should have run my straightening iron through the wig again before the trip) but you can see the lake! ^_^; The people in the boat probably thought we were weird.

more Ayame photos )

Not quite a tropical island… ^_^; Unfortunately, we never got to do beach pictures with this one like I wanted. This outfit was from the chapter where D went on vacation with the Orcots and got amnesia after falling off a boat.

more D photos )

And that’s it for cosplay vacation photos!

Got back to work on my Ekaterina petticoat and I think it should be okay after a few more tweaks. I still don’t get how the waistline came out about 10” larger than what the book said it should be when I first tried it before Costume Con. o_O

NYAF is only 5 weeks away but with the hot weather, I haven’t been very eager to work on the jacket since it would require the undergarments for fitting.

Maybe, I could work on the hat first? Hopefully, I’ll be able to find someplace to get buckram in the city since I’d rather not have to order it online and wait. I wonder if I could substitute needlepoint canvas if I can’t find it since I still have some of that.

I suppose if I run into any more big problems with this, I’ll shelve it again until winter and make Youko for NYAF instead.
ladyofthethread: (Sarah)
Here’s my last set of photos from recent events. Continuing with Anime Boston stuff, I asked my brother to take some Count D photos with my bird although it wasn’t actually the right costume to go with the phoenix. ^_^;

I like how this one is a little creepy and makes it seem like D and Suioh might be plotting something.

more D and Suioh pics )

And I have a few Sarah pics from Sakura Matsuri press day. The weather was ridiculously warm for late April (80 degrees) and I was outside in that fur hood for 2 hours. Strangely, I didn’t feel that hot until I was changing out of it afterwards. o_O; I kind of wish I hadn’t straightened out Sarah’s side bangs so I could use the wig for Cecelia last year; I’ve tried to recurl them a couple of times but they just stay limp and flat. :-/

more pics with the cherry blossoms )

Other people’s pics are still being worked on by my brother but I’m not sure when to expect them up. ^_^;

Unrelated and a long shot since I’ve never heard it mentioned on my friends list but… Anyone else like/would consider cosplaying from Ghost Hunt?

Like The Twelve Kingdoms, it’s also adapted from novels by Fuyumi Ono. Basically, this group called Shibuya Psychic Research (including a Shinto priestess, a Buddhist monk, a Catholic priest, and a medium) investigates cases involving the supernatural. Not an epic like The Twelve Kingdoms but it can be entertaining if you like ghost stories. I picked up the first volume of the manga long ago but found it boring so I didn’t look into the rest. ^_^;; When I found the whole anime was available on Funimation’s video site a couple of months back, I decided to give it another try. Still found the first case boring but the rest were more interesting.

I’ve been contemplating whether to cosplay from it but they wear street clothes most of the time and there aren’t many distinctive costumes. I think the only recognizable ones are the outfits Ayako, Monk, and John wear for exorcisms plus Mai’s school uniform and maybe Monk’s rocker outfit. Masako usually wears kimono but they change from case to case and there isn’t one that particularly sticks out to distinguish her as more than a random girl in a kimono. Naru just wears black street clothes. And Lin looks like a clone of Hatori from Fruits basket. :-P (He dresses in the same manner minus a lab coat and has similar hair although his covers the other eye and is a bit longer and scruffier.) I like the anime but I think it’s probably not worth cosplaying without a group since the individual outfits aren't that distinctive. :-/
ladyofthethread: (Default)
Yay! My brother gave me my photos from the past couple of months so I have stuff to post. ^_^ I’m going to split it up into 2 or 3 posts and start with AnimeNext stuff first since there aren’t many pics of my Tamaki costume yet. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get pics outside with the rain that day so these were taken around 1AM after the hotel cleared out. So, if I look tired, that’s why! ^_^;;;

Tamaki, you idiot! Poofy ballgowns aren’t meant for playing commoners’ games! :-P

more pics of the Host Club King… Or should that be Queen? XD )

And I have one of Count D’s peacock dress with the phoenix prop. Old costume but I wanted to take a pic of it with the bird now that I have one. Even if it’s not the right bird to match the artbook picture. ^_^;;

My brother is still working on all his other pics from Sakura Matsuri, Anime Boston, and AnimeNext. I know he has pics of [livejournal.com profile] animeangel, [livejournal.com profile] neoangelwink [livejournal.com profile] ryoko [livejournal.com profile] sakuralenayuy [livejournal.com profile] usa_ko and [livejournal.com profile] yeu. Plus, some group ones from Sakura Matsuri press day that include [livejournal.com profile] neo2469. He says he’s planning to finally make a Flickr account and post stuff himself so I’ll put up a link after he’s done.
ladyofthethread: (Eugenie)
Last call for holiday cards! If you wanted one but missed the post, it’s here: http://ladyofthethread.livejournal.com/140894.html I’m going to try to get them in the mail next weekend.

Fortunately, I didn’t get picked for jury duty yesterday and got out after 2 hours. Which is good because I would have been stuck there past 5PM for 2 weeks if I did get picked since it was for grand juries. After they got rid of people who didn’t qualify (non-citizens, underage, not a resident of the county, etc.), they said everyone left had to serve if picked and called 75 names at random; there were only 40-50 left in the room after they were done. x_x;

And I got my package from the Cosworx Thanksgiving sale yesterday. ^_^ I bought a Linda XL in Henna Red that I’ll cut bangs into whenever I get around to doing my Youko cosplay. And I got an Ivy wig and a pack of extensions in 24B since I’d like to eventually cosplay Layla from Kaleido Star. I like that it’s much more of a yellow blonde than the New Look version of that shade; I remember going crazy trying to find a nice long yellow blonde wig a few years back for another character! Boy, I’m accumulating a lot of wigs. I now have 5 new ones for characters I mean to do sometime plus one that I’m not sure what to do with because it turned out to be more orangey than I expected. >_>;

Finally, here are a couple of silly Petshop of Horrors drabbles since I haven't had much interesting to post lately: Hayride, Opening Night
ladyofthethread: (D with bird)
Happy Thanksgiving!

I made a cake earlier and dinner was good although it was a little weird not having anyone over this year. When I was a kid, all of our relatives on my mother’s side would come over (4 siblings and their families). Some of them eventually wanted to start cooking their own Thanksgiving dinner so fewer of them came over time. We only had 2 or 3 over last year. But this year, they wanted to go out to eat in Chinatown with relatives on the other side of their family instead. My mother didn’t particularly mind since it meant less work for her. But as long as I can remember, we’ve always had at least a few relatives over for Thanksgiving so it was a bit strange to have no one over at all.

On a more cheerful note, I got Japanese volume 6 of the PSOH sequel in the mail yesterday. Haven’t taken a thorough look through it yet but ooh, I like this picture from the back cover. ^_^

It might go on my list of possible D costumes but if it did, I doubt I’d get to it soon since there isn’t a picture of the front and I’m not good at art. ^_^;; Don’t know if I’d do the scythe. I lack prop experience and can’t imagine it working well for many poses other than the one in the pic since the blade curves like a hook. And with the giant tassel, it has to be the most impractical scythe design ever. :-P I’m also amused Taizu the mobster is in a robe with pink clouds instead of his usual dark suit.

I also kind of like this one. It would be fun for Halloween. Could work for the Costume Con theme of “Vampires, Villains, and Vixens” too but I don’t think I like it enough to bump some of the other things I was considering making.

I think the above was actually supposed to be Taizu’s imagination or something because in the following pages, D is dressed for Halloween in a robe with cartoony ghosts, bats, and jack-o-lanterns. What the hell? XD;

Most ridiculous D outfit ever )

I kind of wonder if Matsuri Akino has been trying to come up with something silly for him to wear every few chapters because there was already an outfit with cartoony birds in an earlier volume, and one with giant fish which weren’t cartoony but looked silly anyway just because they were so huge.
ladyofthethread: (D)
My brother gave me the photos from last weekend so here’s the new Count D costume. ^_^ It doesn’t really show in the photo but there’s a leafy pattern with metallic gold threads woven into the coat fabric and it has a soft golden shimmer to it in person. I like that I came out looking suitably pale in the first few. My brother was jokingly asking me that morning if was sick because of the pale makeup. :-P

more pictures )

And if anyone cares to read… silly little PSOH drabble that I wrote the other day.
ladyofthethread: (D)
I asked my brother to process the group pictures first and he gave them to me a bit earlier. ^_^ Group members, feel free to save copies to post in your galleries.

If anyone’s wondering about the story behind me and novaraven having the same outfit, it was a D costume that we both wanted to make and we thought it would be funny if we wore our versions together and confused people. XD We talked a bit about color and design ideas although we made them separately and at different times. Since D and his grandfather look alike other than eyes, we wore different contacts to be the two of them. I had mismatched purple and yellow for regular D and novaraven had a yellow pair for his grandpa.

The Ds and Leon seem oblivious that the pets are getting into a fight behind them… XD Maybe, they’re daydreaming about cake.

more pics )

And I put together a silly little story with some of the other pics.

D gets arrested for his dangerous pets? )
ladyofthethread: (Renrin)
Oh, dear. My father caught a cold last week and gave it to my mother a few days ago and now my grandmother has it. :-( I hope it doesn’t end up going through the entire family.

On a lighter note, my brother asked me, “Can you make me a costume?” again the other day. “What costume?” “What if I left it up to you?” I thought that was rather silly because it seems a bit pointless to me to cosplay if you can’t think of someone you’d like to dress as. :-P

I told him if it were up to me, I’d dig a suit and tie out of the closet for him and make him be Taizu, the mobster who keeps harassing Count D in the PSOH sequel since he has glasses and wouldn’t need a wig. Or if he insisted on me actually sewing something, Shigure from Fruits Basket (simple costume and no wig needed). Since I haven’t seen most of the series he has watched…

Making a little progress on Sarah. I finished the underskirt last night and am working on patterning the hood now. I hope to get that done over the next few days and then the dress will be the main thing left. The bad thing is that the costume is turning out rather bulky with the netting and faux fur at the bottom of the underskirt. I’m definitely taking it to Anime Boston since I signed up for the hall contest with it but it’s probably going to be reserved for cons where I have a ride in the future.

And I have a new pair of linked PSOH drabbles. They were written for a challenge that involved using the random photo page at Flickr for inspiration and I got this picture of the Eiffel Tower. It’s supposed to be set between the two side stories in volumes 1 and 2 of the sequel so there are spoilers for those.

Parisian Interlude, Part 1 )

Parisian Interlude, Part 2 )

To those going to Katsucon this weekend, have fun! ^_^
ladyofthethread: (Ayame)
Let’s see… Thursday is Chinese New Year so it’s been busy here the last few days with extra cooking and cleaning. (Still have more preparations to work on before bed, too.) But I did manage to fit in some fun things.

Went into the city last Thursday for some bank errands and went fabric shopping afterwards. Checked a few more stores and found some great faux fur at B&J, where I rarely go because it’s expensive. ^_^;; It was $50 for a yard and a half but it was much fluffier than what I had before and the pile sways nicely when you shake it; I think it matches the way the bottom of Sarah’s dress moves pretty well. Now that I have the new fur, I’ve finished the armwarmers and will hopefully be able to finish the underskirt over the next few days.

And after months of being too busy or not having good ideas for the challenges, I finally wrote something for the PSOH drabble community. The prompt was “astrology” which lead me to the Chinese zodiac and the idea it’s lucky to clean your house before the New Year. It’s not very festive though. XD;

Goodbye, Year of the Pig )

And I replayed Escape From Monkey Island and made it to the end this time. (I got stuck towards the end when I first played it several years back.) The controls were kind of awkward since it used the keyboard instead of mouse like most games. Some of the pop culture jokes were kind of dated (the game came out in 2000) but it was lots of fun with silly pirates and parodies. Makes me want to play some of the other old adventure games again. :-D
ladyofthethread: (D)
Update for the AB Petshop of Horrors group. We might have a few more people! The bird of paradise from last year said she could bring the costume again and join us (I don’t believe she’s on LJ though); hikaruchan is coming now and is planning to make a Honlon costume; and natalie526 is interested in doing a pet from one of the covers. And there are still tons of other characters that could be cosplayed so if anyone else wants to join, let me know. :-) I often end up cosplaying solo since many of my favorite series are rarely done so I’m really excited about the prospect of having a big, awesome group! :-D

Count D: [personal profile] ladyofthethread
D’s Grandfather: [profile] novaraven
Leon: novaraven’s friend
Medusa: [profile] heartxofxlilith
Ten-Chan: [profile] doorknocker_dog
Honlon: [profile] hikaruchan
P-Chan: Lilly on cosplay.com
Pon-Chan: novaraven’s friend (if she comes)
Male Toki bird: [profile] jezeroth(if he can make it to AB)
Pink-haired pet from vol. 7 cover[profile] natalie526(if she’s able to finish it in time)

What times are good for everyone to do the group? My suggestion was for Saturday morning/early afternoon so that it shouldn’t conflict with craftsmanship judging for the contests or masquerade rehearsal if anyone’s entering. (I’m signed up for the hall contest and should be getting judging done Friday afternoon.) And any input for how we handle the group since I’ve never been in one this big? I’d love it if we could walk around as a group but I realize that might not be the most feasible idea with 10 people and several very elaborate costumes. Should we just do private photoshoots and then find a spot to hang around for a while so other people can get pictures? Try to walk around together but only for a short time? Suggestions?

My brother has agreed to take some photos for us when everyone’s together but I’d love to have different takes on it, too. Any other photographers out there interested in a photoshoot of this potentially huge group? ^_^

And a reminder since it’s less than a month away… Cosplay chess applications are due February 23 so if you wanted to apply with our group, make sure to have your costume finished and some pictures taken by then. I think novaraven and P-Chan were also interested in applying with their Petshop costumes. If there’s anyone else, let me know so I can note we’re supposed to be a group when I send in my application.

And if anyone going to AB doesn’t have a room yet, this might be helpful…

I FOUND A WAY TO GET ROOMS AT THE SHERATON WITHOUT A DEPOSIT AND FOR EVEN LESS THAN THE CON RATE! Go to the Sheraton Boston Hotel’s website, click on the link on the right which says “hotel offers” and choose the one that says “Triple Starpoints plus Starbucks Giftcard on Weekend Stays.” You can get rates as low as $149/night for double occupancy, which is considerably less than the $185/night con rate for 2. Triple for $204/night and quad for $249/night.

Plus, you can get rooms with 2 double beds (the con block only offered rooms with 1 king bed and max of 3 people to a room), you don’t need to make a deposit (con rate required deposit for first night when you booked) and only need to cancel 24 hours in advance if you can’t make it to avoid a penalty (was 72 hours for con rate). And you’re supposed to get a $10 Starbucks giftcard for free, too. I assume you’ll need to sign up for Starwood Preferred Guest (their hotel points program) since part of the offer is triple hotel points. But it’s free and quick; only requires you to put in your e-mail and choose a password.

I thought it would be much more convenient to stay at the Sheraton so I wouldn’t have to cross the mall with my cumbersome costumes. But the problem was that I needed space for 4 since my brother’s friends wanted to come with us and I don’t like trying to sneak extra people into rooms. So, I was really happy when I found this offer a few nights ago. Compared to the con block rates and policies, I feel like I beat the system! :-D

Hmm… It’s been about 2 weeks since I last updated because I’ve been lazy. >_>; So, this is going to be a huge collection of random stuff… Update for the Anime Boston PSOH group next time.

To [profile] selphie84 and [livejournal.com profile] ngmaster: Thanks for the call yesterday. It was a nice little unexpected surprise. :-D Sorry I didn’t actually make it into the city to meet up with you guys.

Next, it seems I need to note a correction to something I posted after NYAF. Shortly before Christmas, I wrote to Peter Tatara for clarification about the awards and got a reply a couple of weeks ago. The only award he has me listed for is 1st Place Craftsman and he says there wasn’t a Best of Show for the hall contest, only Best Craftsmanship. I’m not really upset about it or anything but it makes me wonder a bit if I’m losing my mind since I could have sworn they announced a Best of Show tie between me and one of the novice winners at the end, after I went up to the stage. ._.;

On to a more serious matter, I’m kind of questioning how well Chase handles their statements. The other week, they sent a letter saying that they mistakenly listed $0 balances for some accounts on statements they sent out in December (of course, I caught it when the statement first arrived). This is the second time they’ve messed up on one of my parents’ statements within the past half year. -_- And their statements already annoy me because they don’t seem that user friendly. I don’t claim to be a financial genius but I did take finance as one of my majors at NYU and graduated with honors; yet, their statements still don’t make complete sense to me at times! >_<

Since it’s the beginning of the year, my family’s mailbox is being crammed with tax return documents and it’s my job to keep track of them all; it adds up to a lot of mail with 6 of us here. I found it pretty silly that my bank sent me a separate mail for the $1.02 of interest that I had from my checking account instead of just tacking it onto the one from my savings account!

I recently finished watching Le Chevalier D’Eon. cut for spoilers )

And I got the 5th volume of the Petshop of Horrors sequel the other week. Not completely sure what’s going on at times since I don’t know any Japanese but a couple of parts were pretty darn weird. O_o; cut for spoilers )

I’m finally getting back to working on cosplay stuff now and have been sewing the underskirt for Sarah’s Cinderella costume. I made it with some leftover white cotton and attached a few layers of netting near the hem to make the bottom poofy. Still need to put faux fur over the netting but I’m thinking I should get new material because the fur I have now has a rather short pile and doesn’t look fluffy enough. I’d bought it because I was having trouble finding anything else in white other than fun fur (the stuff I used for my T-Chan plushie) and I thought the backing on that might be too stiff. Don’t know what I’d do with the yard and a half that I already have though since nothing else I want to cosplay calls for fake fur.

And the other night, my siblings and I randomly got onto the subject of old computer games at dinner. The 7th Guest, Myst, Monkey Island, Laura Bow, lots of lesser known stuff and even text games! My favorites from those days had to be the adventure games which didn’t require much combat (if any) and mostly involved collecting items and using them to solve puzzles and advance the storyline. Never got too much into games that involved lots of combat since my coordination is terrible. Like I remember we had a PC version of Street Fighter and I never used the special moves because of my awful coordination with such things. ^_^;; And I think I usually failed miserably when trying to kill the monsters in Alone in the Dark. XD; I wonder if there are still any good adventure games released these days… I don’t play games as often now and I don’t think I’ve played any as involved as the ones from the ‘90s for a long time.

Okay, I’m done. I did say this post was going to be random, didn’t I? :-P

For those who didn’t already see on cosplay.com, new Count D costume:
http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1348361

And a couple of closeups. No cut since I’ve been working on this costume since August and the studio shoot with my brother took ridiculously long to set up and do, too. :-P

Might just be me but I think this one *almost* looks like it could be a still from a movie. Only almost because if it were, it’d definitely have better makeup! I don’t think I do that well with eyes. ^_^;

I have more but those are going to wait until after NYAF!

And speaking of PSOH, I’m really looking forward to the Anime Boston group, which should be awesome. ^_^ Currently, I have…

Count D - myself
D’s grandfather – [livejournal.com profile] novaraven
Leon – novaraven’s friend
Pon-Chan – novaraven’s friend
Ten-Chan – [livejournal.com profile] bloodied_tears
Medusa – [livejournal.com profile] heartxofxlilith
male Toki bird -[livejournal.com profile] jezeroth

If there are any other changes or additions, please let me know. I’ve also sent a PM to the P-Chan I took pictures with at AB this year and asked if she’s interested in joining us but haven’t heard back yet; she doesn’t seem to be on cosplay.com that often. Also, heartxofxlilith, did your friend still want to do Honlon?

And some questions…

I know it’s early but does anyone have input on what day/time we should do the group? I know a couple of us talked about possibly applying for chess as a group but Sunday would be too hectic for pictures if we did that. How’s Saturday morning/early afternoon for people? I think that would be the time least likely to interfere if anyone wants to enter the masquerade or hall contest since it looks like most craftsmanship judging will be done Friday.

And I know that everyone has to fill in their own application this year but I wanted to have an idea… who wants to apply for cosplay chess with Petshop costumes? Registration should be opening in a couple of weeks but there’s no hurry. Just keep in mind that you should have your costume done by the February 23 deadline if you’d like to apply with it. ^_^ Feel free to put other non-Petshop costumes on your applications, too, since I think a big group would more likely be used as special attacks than pieces. I’m probably applying with a D costume and maybe, his sister’s dress.

Oh, and one more unrelated thing…

If you would like a holiday card and missed my post before: http://ladyofthethread.livejournal.com/120143.html Cards have been bought and I’ll try to get them in the mail sometime next week.

Boy, it’s not even 9:30 on Halloween and I feel about ready to fall sleep. I got to bed late last night and then woke up at 7AM because some construction crew started working on the next block over and making a lot of noise. -_-

Went into the city this afternoon, dressed as Count D, and my brother took really random pictures. Like walking around the subway, looking at vegetables at a farmer’s market, and sitting in a park with Q-Chan and Mokona from Tsubasa. XD; Not sure why he wanted to do that particular crossover again.

Oh, and I forgot to post this drabble here before. Just a silly little thing for Halloween, written for a prompt of “kaleidoscope.” The other people at the party are intended to be random pets. I assumed that D used his magic so that they’d appear human to Leon for the occasion.
